Ancient Roman Clothing

Ancient Roman Clothing has always struck a particular chord with people throughout history wanting to re-live this or the other aspect of those ancient times. Dressing up in a toga has recurred over and over again from the times of Shakespeare’s plays through to the antics of Toga parties and Cinema productions such as Cleopatra, Ben Hur and The Gladiator. The consequence is that numerous items of Roman clothing and apparel are easily available in commerce and can be easily purchased online. All this has led to a popular albeit superficial understanding of what Roman clothing was all about.

Renaissance Costume

The Renaissance was a time of rebirth, and marked a jump in art, literature, religion, and science throughout Europe. The effects of this time period are still being felt today. Around the country there are hundreds of Renaissance Fairs every year where fans can dress up in Renaissance costumes and see shows, feast on period cuisine, and partake in other activities. Renaissance Fairs may be set in the Elizabethan Era of England, though other popular themes include 18th century pirates or the French Renaissance. For many, historical accuracy is a must, and costume wearers, artisans, and entertainers go all out for the celebration.

Renaissance Costumes

The popular image that we have of Renaissance costume, particularly that of England, is what was worn by the upper classes. Style was paramount, and both men and women in the Renaissance wore clothing we would consider costumes, similar to the 'costumes' we wear in formal occasions today. Look at a modern wedding to see a perfect example. If an historian were to see a photo of a wedding in our time, might he not think we wore such finery all the time?

Renaissance Costume

Renaissance costume was distinctive. The Renaissance culture was very conscious of fashion, and their costume was extremely stylized, very complex and elaborate, and above all, striking. The very nature of the Renaissance clothing style was to make a statement, whether that was of status, power or of wealth.
